Sir,

I have the honour to transmit for your

favourable consideration an application which I have received

from Mr. Pestonjee, 3rd Clerk in the Treasury, asking that

he may be removed from the 4th Class of Subordinate Clerks

and placed in Class III.

2.

Mr. Pestonjee at present draws the maximum

salary allowed to clerks in Class IV viz. - $1,500 per annum.

He thus has no hope of an increment to his salary, and at the

same time occupies a position of considerable trust in the

Treasury being responsible for the collection of over a million

dollars annually in comparatively small sums.

3.

I propose to decide, subject to your sanction,

that Mr. Pestonjee be graded in the III Class of Civil

Service Clerks, the privilege to attach to Mr. Pestonjee personally

and not to the office which he fills.

I have the honour to be,

Sir,

Your most obedient

Humble servant,

M.J. Gascoigne

Major-General,

Administering the Government.

JOSEPH CHAMBERLAIN, M.P.,
